Philosophy

Anyone can have a view on anything, and kids should be encouraged to develop and express theirs. Even seemingly simple questions can help kids inspect what is around them which otherwise might be taken for granted.
Each of the coaching cards below takes no more than five minutes and requires zero preparation. Since they are broadly for 5 - 15 year olds, we have tagged them as easy / medium / hard to help you pick the most appropriate for your child.

Happy Always

If you could always be happy, would you choose to be so?

Consider the nature of happiness
Medium
Guidance
While tempting to say yes, explore the meaningfulness of being happy without ever being sad. Ask them to consider "grades" of happiness - eating ice cream vs going on holiday for instance. Seek "expert" opinions by asking teachers, monks and celebrities? Help them realise the permanence of their answer and see if they can ask yo for a trial first!

Guidance

While tempting to say yes, explore the meaningfulness of being happy without ever being sad.

Encourage probabilities to be used here
Prompts if stuck
1) How many years of history are there for humans?

Guidance

Encourage probabilities to be used here. Probably you could work out how much past there has been , or look this up, and be reasonably sure of the answer. But the future is more open ended and have more uncertainty attached to it. How do these two things balance out? As a bonus - explore not just the lengths of times, but also the number of people / progress of civilisation etc as a different measure of size.

Prompts if stuck

1) I think humans have been around for 200,000 years. What does that tell us about our past?

2) How long into the future will we exist?

3) How certain are you about each of your answers?
