How can I have more meaningful conversations with my kids?

We all want to have better and more meaningful conversations with our kids. It’s easy though to get stuck in a rut of asking the same old thing!

💡 One thing I have discovered is that kids really open up when their curiosity is piqued. It's when I manage to come up with an interesting, open-ended question that has taken them by surprise - that’s when they linger, and talk, and ask questions back.

Just the other day for instance we had a great conversation about whether “chocolate-flavoured rain would be a good or a bad thing?!” 🍫 My daughter said “Yes, because I love chocolate!” and my son said “No, because everything would get sticky.” We then got into all the reasons why it could be good or bad, which was super fun, but also developed their critical thinking skills at the same time. Even though the conversation only lasted 5-10 minutes that was longer than we usually manage and I know it’s something we will remember for a while!

Conversation card from the KidCoachApp - would chocolate flavoured rain be good or bad?

Sounds good, I don’t have time to come up with questions like this!

Fortunately for you, I've done all the hard work so you don’t have to. I have written hundreds of quick, fun and stimulating questions for kids. They are all in my app called the "KidCoachApp" but I want send you send you a question a day from it - FREE!

👉 Some more examples would be “what are 10 things you can do with a cup?” or “if you found a new country, what 3 laws would you pass first?” or how can you make your clothes better?” These are all surprising questions that your kids will never expect but will totally love!

If you tap the links you will see that each question is really a conversation card with some guidance for you and prompts for the kids. Parents tell me these are great to keep the conversation going!

Why a 30 day challenge?

They say it takes about 30 days for anyone to build a new habit whether it is starting a new diet, or a new exercise regime, or in this case asking kids unusual questions to connect! It’s long enough to make a difference but not so long that it is overwhelming. Here is a great 3 minute TED talk on the benefits of trying something new for 30 days.

💨 The fantastic thing about these questions is that they are quick, need no preparation or materials and can be done literally anywhere that suits you. Some families do it during the school run, others over the dinner table, others just before bedtime etc. It really is a fun habit you can build easily into your daily routine, in a way that works for your family.

Anything else I should know?

Funny you ask 😊.

The other thing I have to say about these questions is that they get kids developing skills and “learning” without even realising that they are! Each of the questions is very open-ended and has no right answer.

🏋 This is exactly what the next generation will need to thrive. "21st century skills" like creativity, communication, critical thinking etc are just so crucial, and I believe that we parents can help our kids develop these simply through conversation at home.

“At the end of a long day it can be tough to find the energy and inspiration to talk about something new. The questions you have are an easy and effective go-to. My kids love them so much they are now asking ME for the questions every day!”

Tell me again, why should I bother?

For those of you who scroll to the bottom of pages like this (I do the same!) here are the important points:
  1. You can have more meaningful conversations with your kids if you ask them fun, surprising and open-ended questions. Kids love to think about new things and you’ll build key skills in them as well as some wonderful memories as you go.
  2. I have hundreds of questions perfect for this in the KidCoachApp. It’s normally a paid subscription but I want to send you, for FREE, a question a day this summer straight to your inbox, e.g. this one on chocolate-flavoured rain!
  3. 30 day challenges are a perfect way to try something new and I guarantee you will see the benefits if you give it a go, just like countless others mums and dads have already.
  4. There are also over £1000 worth of prizes available for anyone signing up by 30th July 2021, so what are you waiting for?!
